HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I have a BIOS update gone wrong on my EliteBook x360 1030 G2.

After the update, the laptop no longer boots. Pressing the power button results in the backlit keyboard lighting up and the internal fan spinning up for a few seconds. The lights then fade and the laptop switches off, with the power LED blinking white and orange a few times. This process usually repeats a couple of times before the laptop switches off permanently.

Nothing comes up on the screen during this process, so I can't enter BIOS/diagnostics to perform any tests of a recovery.

The laptop has been working perfectly up until now so I don't suspect a hardware fault.

Is there anyway to reset / recover the BIOS? I have downloaded the latest BIOS and used the utility to create a USB recovery drive, but the laptop doesn't appear to boot from USB with the drive attached.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Here are the official steps for flashing BIOS from within Windows or from UEFI pre-boot.

Also the Windows key + B method, which seems more applicable to your situation:

Hi Huffer,

Thanks for the quick response I've downloaded the BIOS and created a USB drive, but I can't seem to get the laptop to boot from it.

Could it be a different key combination for the EliteBook x360 G2? Neither Windows key + B nor Windows key + V seems to force a USB boot.

Those are the 2 choices I am aware of. Windows + B is much more common.

Is there any other way to recover the laptop? I can't seem to get it to boot from the USB drive and I thought a system as high-end as this may have included a built-in reset.

For the sake of simply troubleshooting, I thought I'd try a different USB stick but now I don't appear to be able to create the boot drive. When I download and run the BIOS update, the .exe returns the error: "The BIOS system update file is missing or corrupt. The system BIOS will not be updated." After that, Create Recovery USB Flash Drive is greyed out, with Backup BIOS being the only option.

This is the BIOS update for the EliteBook x360 1030 G2: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84501-85000/sp84583.exe

Can anybody confirm whether or not the .exe works correctly?
