Hi.
Let's get the essential information out first:
What is your operating system?
Did hibernation ever work with your laptop or is this a recent development?
Does a normal shut down and standby/sleep work?
I would recommend updating BIOS and drivers of your laptop, as well as updating the operating system.
Try disabling and re-enabling hibernation with powercfg -h off and powercfg -h on from an elevated command line.
Try also reseting the Windows Power settings to their defaults with powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
The hibernation file c:\hiberfil.sys by default is 40% of actual memory, but it can grow up to the amount of all your RAM, so make sure your C: drive has the capacity for it.
The black screen could also be a BSOD, but with your graphics card already be turned off for the hibernation the screen is black. Enable automatic reboot and minimal crash dump - does the computer reboot shortly (1-2 minutes?) after the hibernation error? If this was a Blue Screen (BSOD) then the dump file can be analysed for the offending hardware driver with e.g. Nirsoft Blue Screen View or MS WinDbg.
In any case, when you have rebooted your computer after the hibernation attempt, check the Windows Event Viewer and System Log for possible clues causing the failure.
