David,

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

According to the service manual, the fingerprint reader / sensor is an optional feature.

Maintenance and Service Guide

Item #4 > Pages 12-13

The cover plate and an actual sensor look the same.

Use the Device Manager to verify whether the system detects a Biometric fingerprint reader.

Example

Find Device Manager - Biometrics Information

  1. Device Manager > View “Devices by type” AND “Show hidden devices”
  2. Open category Biometric devices
  3. Look for and Right-Click on the fingerprint reader device > Properties
  4. Tab Details
  5. Beneath Property, “Device description”

Set Fingerprint sensor to “Always on”

  1. Device Manager > View “Devices by type” AND “Show hidden devices”
  2. Open category Biometric devices
  3. Look for and Right-Click on the fingerprint reader device > Properties
  4. Tab Power Management
  5. UN-Check, (Clear Box) “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”
  6. Check “Allow this device to wake the computer”
  7. Click OK to apply / save any change

What else?

If applicable,

If you have not already done so,

Consider updating the BIOS.

Hello David,

In addition to what @Dragon-Fur  wrote and suggested, please try the following:

Perform hard reset (power reset) of your notebook. Here is how to do it -> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1997208-1551050-16

Press and hold the power-on button for 15 seconds. Also try 30 seconds.

Go to BIOS (F10). Go to Security tab.

Reset the fingerprint sensor, apply the default security settings. Apply and exit the BIOS. You will need to confirm the change on several prompts after that.

Is this the driver you used/downloaded -> https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp142001-142500/sp142187.exe
