HP ProBook 440 14 inch G9 Notebook PC (4D7R3AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, I just bought an HP ProBook 440 G9 2 days ago and the fingerprint sensor wasn't working so I went back to the store and traded it in for a new laptop (of the same model) and I'm having the same issue where when I try to setup windows hello fingerprint sensor it says, "that it's unavailable at this time." I've already installed the latest drivers and I've followed guides I've found online and iv also contacted hp and Microsoft support and nobody can help me, so I was wondering if anyone else was having the same issue and if someone knows how to help me.

Welcome to the HP Community --

If the optional sensor is installed -- and the little square is not just a "cover",

(then)

The Device Manager should detect the device and provide information for it.

That said, I don't recognize the exact error.

Perhaps the system is not yet done installing Windows Updates -- a new system can take a minute to get "caught up".

Not the issue at this point?  Ignore.

What else?

Personal experience with this fussy "tap" type sensor:  Even assuming all the Device Manager checkpoints to "check out", this particular type of fingerprint sensor MIGHT be fussy about the fingerprint.  Dab a bit of lotion on that finger and rub it in before setting up your printers.

Device Manager - Biometric devices

Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager

Tab View

Check Show hidden devices

Select Devices by Type

Open Biometric devices

Right-Click on the Sensor entry > Open Properties

Open Tab General

Check the Device Status

Next,

Check the other sections / tabs to see if anything looks odd or out of place...

Check that the Power Management is the way you want it.

What else?

Check your Probook BIOS for settings that impact the sensor.

when you register your fingerprint that all sides of your

It varies based on HP part number against which 440 G9 is offered as finger print is additional feature which is not included by default in all models rather installed in specific ones only. The square cut as sensor is dummy cover only
