Hi:
The G stands for Generation.
Each Elitebook generation normally has a newer processor and chipset, and also may have newer hardware such as the model wifi adapter.
The 840 series has gone from G1 and is currently at G6.
G1 had Intel 4th gen core processors
G2 had Intel 5th gen core processors
G3 had Intel 6th gen core processors
G4 had Intel 7th gen core processors
G5 had Intel 8th gen core processors
G6 also has Intel 8th gen core processors
You can usually find the specs for each generation by googling 840 G# quickspecs (insert the number you are interested in).
