thunderbolt 230 W g2

I have been having problems with my thunderbolt dock that i bought for my HP Zbook 17 G5 mobile workstation since i bought it via my institute some years ago.

The monitor connection and power connetctions seem to work, so i can charge my laptop and attach an external monitor.

But the USB ports simply are not recognized.

I have updated all drivers, firmware and Bios. I have tried running and checking the thunderbolt device manager software, but that simply does not start.

When trying to contact HP support, i am asked for my serial number. I enter the correct serial number from my device but it is simply not recognized:  "please enter a valid serial number"...

I am stumped. Why do the USB ports not work? What is the problem with the thunderbolt software? What is with the not recognized serial number? And why can't i get support from HP for this?

Hi @johnv79

Could it be that the devices attached via these ports are blocked and not authorized ?

Check this article >> https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c06175560

You might also consider switching the TB security level to None in the BIOS (F10).

  1. While in BIOS:
  2. Select Advanced tab
  3. Select Port options
  4. Select Thunderbolt Security Level.
  5. Change the Thunderbolt Security Level option to PCIe and DisplayPort - No Security
  6. Select Save.
  7. Make sure you SAVE the changes before you exit the BIOS.

Thanks for the help, I think this may bring me to the right track! But the option you mentioned is not available for me under "thunderbolt security level" in the Bios. The only options available to me are:

  • PCIe and DisplayPort - User Authorization
  • PCIe and DisplayPort - Secure Connect
  • DisplayPort and USB
  • Daisy Chaining Disabled

However, I don't know what these options mean, exactly. Does this mean I have to choose between enabling USB and PCIe? Which option would be best in my case?
