Product: HP Elitebook 1030 G1

Hello,

 

i tried to install an linux OS on an Elitebook 1030 G1 in a way that the boot files and the grub bootloader are located on an usb-stick.

 

Unfortunately - althought i disabled "Secure Boot" and enabled "Legacy Boot" in BIOS - the usb-device is not recognized in the bootmenu (F9).

 

Trying the setup with an HP Elitebook 1020 G1 works flawlessly.

 

I encountered the same problem with an HP Elitebook 820 G3, maybe it's a more widespread problem of HP's Skylake systems.

 

Is there an option in BIOS i was missing ?

Hi,

 

i finally figured out, how to boot a legacy linux:

 

I enabled the "bootable"-flag of the boot partition (although grub was installed on MBR). Now the "Legacy"-option in the F9-menu appears for my usbstick and booting is possible.

 

After removing the "bootable"-flag, the stick won't be recognized again.

 

My previously owned laptops - HP 1020 G1, Thinkpad X220 - would boot even without the bootable-flag - that's why it took me some testing to solve the mystery.
