HP Elitebook 640 G10
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a HP Elitebook 640 G10,  which has 2 USB-C ports on the right edge. From the manual, both support USB Type-C power connector port, SS 10Gbps port, and DP port, but only one (the one nearer the hinge of the laptop) is a Thunderbolt port.

It seems that the non-TB port seems to take precedence when charging, i.e. as long as any USB-C cable is plugged in there, the laptop thinks it's charging via there, even when the cable is non-charging. For example, I connect a DP to USB-C cable from my monitor to that port, and Windows tells me that it's connected to a "slow charger", even when I have the stock 65W power adapter plugged in. When I disconnect the USB cable from that port, or if I plug the cable into the TB port, it goes back to normal charging.

Also, what power output is required of a charger? I thought it'd be 65W since that's the stock charging adapter, but I have a Belkin P-F4U092 USB-C hub that supports 60W USB-PD passthrough output, and when I connect it to a 140W USB-PD 3.1 USB wall charger, Windows still warns that it's connected to a "slow charger". Surely a 5W different (60W vs 65W) shouldn't make such a difference, or does it? When I connect the laptop directly to the 140W USB wall charger, it charges normally with no warnings.

The same setup on a previous Thinkpad T14 Gen 2 I had charged normally.

Its specs

You can use one of the following HP chargers

  • 65 W nPFC Standard USB Type-C Straight 1.8 m
  • 65 W Smart nPFC EM Barrel 4.5 mm New EM
  • 65 W Smart nPFC Standard Barrel 4.5 mm Right Angle 1.8 m

One thing for sure the Belkin P-F4U092 is NOT compatible with your machine. From manual, it is compatible with the following docks

  • Thunderbolt™ 120 W G4 dock (with cable) part # M97105-001
  • Thunderbolt 120 W G4 dock (with cable) (TAA) part # N17490-001
  • Thunderbolt 280 W G4 dock (with cable) part # M97106-001
  • Thunderbolt 280 W G4 dock (with cable) (TAA)  N17491-001
  • Thunderbolt dock 120 W (with cable) part # L15809-001
  • USB-C dock (with cable) part # L64086-001
  • USB-C/A universal dock (with cable) part # L64087-001

Regards.

Hi,

I don't think "compatibility" is a thing since both laptop and dock support USB-PD. In fact, I'm using another Lenovo 90W dock that also supports USB-PD with no slow charging issues, so I think it's a matter of power. The Lenovo dock is obviously not listed in the HP manual as "compatible" but it nevertheless works. I'm just a bit surprised that 60W over USB-PD isn't enough, considering the stock charger supplies just 5W more at 65W.

Anyway, I noticed after re-plugging it a few times that I'm not getting the slow charging warning message. Perhaps it's some USB-PD renegotiation going on. Will monitor and see how it goes.
