I have 2 displays connected via the Thunderbolt 3 dock. This has worked fine until recently. Now the computer can not detect the external displays any more. Apparently the computer can not communicate via the thnderbolt 3 dock. 

 

This may have happened during a recent windows uppgrade.

Hi,

 

I suggest using the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI utility to test the thunderbolt 3 port.

 

From a powered off state press the power button and then immediately press the F2 key.

 

That will invoke the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI utility.

 

Go to Component tests and find the Thunderbolt test and run it.

 

You can also remove the Windows update that may have caused it.

 

While logged into Windows  Press the Windows key + i to open settings

 

Choose Update and security

 

Click on Update History

 

Click the Uninstall Updates link

 

Choose the update you want to get rid of. I suggest choosing one with the date on which that you remember  the issue starting

 

Click the uninstall button that appears in the toolbar

 Follow the directions that appear on the screen. Restart Windows if you are prompted to do so.

Unfortunately it did not solve my problem. 

 

Using the UEFI utility, the following msg appeared:

"Thunderbolt devices using the type-C port configuration is currently not supported".

I am not sure if the means that it is not supported in the test utility, or if it means that this kind of port is not supported on the computer any more?

 

I also tried to roll back the windos updates, but again it did not improve the situation 😞 

 

This is very anoying as it was working all very well previoously......

Is it an HP Thunderbolt dock?

 

The error message could be the result of a Windows update that caused the Thunderbolt dock's  firmware to no longer be compatible.

 

Have you updated your drivers lately? Specifically the Intel Thunderbolt 3 secure connect  driver

Yes, this is an HP Elite Thunderbolt 3 Dock. 

 

I suspect that somehow the Thunderbolt port has been disabled, probably due to a Windows update. But I don’t know for sure if this is the case, and I don’t know how to get it back again.

 

I have run the sp133131.exe update, with no change in the situation.

 

I have run the HP program for detection of recommended firmware updates to my computer. The outcome is that my computer is already updated.

 

Even though the HP assistant does not recommend any specific firmware updates, I have tried to run the sp96414 “HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock Firmware”. Then the following message pops up on my computer: “Please attach this computer to the docking station to proceed” (yes, I have tried to use an other cable to connect my computer to the docking station). So, apparently the Thunderbolt port is “dead”.

 

I have now tried to connect a USB-C docking stating (Thinkpad) to the Thunderbolt port. This works OK…

 

It looks like the Thunderbolt is dead, and that I have to buy a USB-C docking station to connect my external desplays 😞

Thunderbolt devices using the type-C port configuration is currently not supported  means that the HP UEFI Diagnostics tool does not support Thunderbolt devices.

The version of the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI utility that I have installed in my Spectre 13-ap000 x360 notebook does  check the operation of the Thunderbolt controller in the notebook. It is version 8.5.0.0.
