M27fd USB-C

The firmware update supplies by support.hp.com will mess up the display scaler.  See attached resulting display after the update.  It's even worse on HDMI than USB-A Alt. Mode.  HP 20250211_153550.jpg

Hi @kquinn9999,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your concern!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand how frustrating it must be to update your monitor’s firmware, expecting improvements, only to run into display issues instead. That’s definitely not the experience we want for you, and I appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Power Cycle the Monitor

  1. Turn off the monitor.
  2. Unplug the power cable and all connected display cables (HDMI, USB-C, etc.).
  3. Wait 5 minutes.
  4. Plug everything back in and power on.

Factory Reset the Monitor

  1. Open the OSD (On-Screen Display) Menu using the monitor buttons.
  2. Navigate to Factory Reset (usually under Management or Display Settings).
  3. Select Reset and confirm.

Reinstall Previous Firmware (If Available)

  • HP may not officially provide older firmware but check if you can roll back the firmware in the HP Display Center app or HP Support website.
  • If you have an older firmware file, re-flash it using HP’s Firmware Update Utility.

Check Display Input Settings

  • If the issue is worse over HDMI, try different ports and cables.
  • Test another PC/laptop to rule out compatibility issues.

Update Graphics Drivers

  • Ensure your GPU drivers are up to date from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  • Try different display resolutions in your PC’s settings.

HP is committed to delivering high-quality products and support, and I want to make sure we get this sorted for you. Let’s troubleshoot this together.

Kenshi,

We tried all of those things and then some last week, no joy/change 😞

BUT, on a whim tried the display today and of course it worked fine 😐

It's not clear if the issue is mitigated or if will return later, we will keep an eye on it but for now it appears to function as intended.

Thanks for your support,

Kevin

The issue persists.  No matter how I plug this monitor in, dock, PC (I have 50+ in the lab) it does not function correctly.  Is there a way to get the old firmware on it?

Hi @kquinn9999,

Unfortunately, you can only update to the latest firmware. you will not be able to downgrade it  😞

I hope this helps.

Well, do you want the monitor to diagnose?  Its now all but useless to us now.

Hi @kquinn9999,

Thank you for the response.

You can try the following steps:

Use HP Display Center to Reset Firmware (If Available)

  1. Open HP Display Center (if installed).
  2. Look for a "Reset Firmware" or "Restore Default Settings" option.
  3. If available, apply it and restart the monitor.

Try a Different Connection Type

  • If HDMI isn't working well, try USB-C or DisplayPort (if available).
  • Test with a different cable or a lower resolution to check if it improves.

Hard Reset the Monitor Again (Extended Version)

  1. Unplug everything from the monitor (power, HDMI, USB-C, etc.).
  2. Hold the power button for 30 seconds (drains residual power).
  3. Wait at least 10 minutes.
  4. Plug everything back in and turn it on.

I realize this monitor is out of warranty, so I appreciate you have offered things to try, but it remains at issue.  When HDMI is used with Firmware version 1.6.8.0, the monitor only renders a "squished" image on the top half of the screen.

Changes in Cables, PCs, etc. do not change this fact.  Using USB-C (Alt. Mode) connections does render correctly.  Unfortunately, however, using an HDMI connection does not.

Again, if you want the monitor to diagnose so that others do not get frustrated let me know.  Otherwise, we will use it in the lab for only USB-C testing.

Hi @kquinn9999,

It sounds like the firmware update permanently altered how the HP M27fd handles HDMI scaling, making it unreliable for HDMI connections but still functional via USB-C (Alt Mode). Since HP does not allow firmware downgrades, your options are limited.

Check for Any New Firmware Updates

HP may release a patch if this is a widespread issue. Check the HP Support page regularly.

Force a Custom Resolution via GPU Settings

In NVIDIA Control Panel (or AMD/Intel equivalent), try adjusting:

Scaling mode (e.g., "Full-screen" or "Aspect Ratio").

Custom resolution settings.

This may help if the scaler is misconfigured.

Use a Different HDMI Source

Try a different HDMI version cable (e.g., HDMI 1.4 vs. 2.0).

If available, test with a different HDMI output port on the PC.

HDMI-to-USB-C Adapter

Since USB-C works correctly, using an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter might trick the monitor into displaying properly.

Since the monitor still works via USB-C, you can keep using it for that purpose. But if HDMI is essential, a replacement might be the only long-term fix. 😕

I hope this helps.
