Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I’m Arman.

I have been using my HP ProBook 450 G4 (i5 7th Gen) for about 8 years. For the last 7 days, I have been facing a problem.

While I was working, my laptop suddenly shut down. After a short time, it automatically turned on and showed this message on the screen:

"Real Time Clock Error (005)"

After that, when I press the power button, the laptop does not turn on. However, if I wait for 3–4 hours and then press the power button, it turns on and shows the same RTC error message again.

When I press Ctrl + Alt + Del, the laptop restarts. After restarting, I can work normally for about 7 hours continuously without any shutdown. But after several hours, the same problem happens again.

I have already:

  • Replaced the RTC (CMOS) battery with a new one

  • Corrected the date and time in BIOS

  • Updated the BIOS

  • Reinstalled Windows

Despite doing all this, the problem is still happening.

What should I do now? Please help me.

Thank you.71374611-54df2180-25e1-11ea-8a89-6f3e871950f2.jpg

@goodboyarman, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP ProBook 450 G4 (i5 7th Gen).

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

I'm here to help with questions related to HP products and services, but it seems you were describing an issue. Based on what you've shared, the "Real Time Clock Error (005)" typically indicates a problem with the CMOS battery or the system clock on your laptop. This can often happen if the CMOS battery is depleted, which is possible over the span of several years.

Here are some steps you can take to address the issue:

  1. Check the CMOS Battery: The RTC error is often caused by a depleted CMOS battery. Replacing the CMOS battery can resolve this error. The CMOS battery generally lasts around 5-10 years, so after using your laptop for 8 years, it might be time to replace it.

  2. Power Drain: Disconnect the charger and remove the laptop battery (if it's removable). Then press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power. After doing this, reconnect everything and attempt to power on the laptop.

  3. BIOS Update: Ensure that your BIOS is up-to-date. An outdated or corrupted BIOS can also cause errors. You can update the BIOS from the HP Support website.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
