I have an HP EliteBook 8740w running Windows 11 Pro. I installed HP Support Assistant to it and it doesn't bring up much information about the laptop itself, but does do most other HP Support (2026.06.17).jpgHP Support 2 (2026.06.17).jpgthings like check for my HP Printer Updates, etc... On my other laptop I don't see the HP EliteBook on my HP Support Assistant Profile. I do the usual thing and try to add the device and the prompt says "Cannot get data about provided product" when I try to add the device to my profile. The laptop then never adds to my account. It is clearly an HP product, but a Business Laptop. Is there a different version for the Business line, and if so why can't I still just add it to my account from another account? Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Hi,

The EliteBook 8740w is an older HP business workstation model, so HP Support Assistant may not fully detect it or may not be able to add it correctly to your HP account/profile, especially when it is running Windows 11.

This does not necessarily mean the laptop is not genuine. It usually means the model is no longer fully supported by the current HP Support Assistant backend/profile system, or that Windows 11 is not an officially supported operating system for that model.

A few things you can try:

  1. Make sure you are using the latest version of HP Support Assistant.
  2. Restart the laptop and try adding the device again using the product number, not only the model name.
  3. Do not post your serial number publicly.
  4. Check the official HP support page manually using the product number.
  5. Use Windows Update for any remaining drivers.
  6. For HP business devices, you may also check whether HP Image Assistant supports the model, but very old models may not be fully supported there either.

There may not be a separate HP Support Assistant version just for this older business laptop. For legacy business models, manual driver/support lookup from the HP support site is often more reliable than adding the device to the HP Support Assistant profile.

Hope this helps.
