Let me explain a few things first:
- I normally never shutdown my laptop unless it is necessary for the software update
- The most recent changes I made on the laptop were installation of Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 v5.115
- Everything worked fine after this update
...and yesterday I wanted to use the laptop but I had white screen saying something about HP SureStart, security keys, bla, bla. I could only choose escape or choose OK what always brought me back in the same screen. I tried a lot of things including disconnecting battery, Windows+B, Windows+V, F10, Esc, Power key +arrows ==> nothing worked. So I created a case for HP and while I'm still waiting finance team to make quantitation, I tried one more time to fix it my self. ...and this time it worked. To make long story short, this is what worked for me:
Turn off the computer.
Disconnect the AC adapter.
Remove any discs from the disc drive.
Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.
Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.
NOTE:Do not disconnect your mouse, keyboard, or monitor.
With the AC adapter unplugged, press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds. (I did 30 seconds)
Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.
This helped me to enter the BIOS and unselect option which was causing this (something with HP Sure Store security keys). Then I looked for how to save changes (I couldn't see at the first; need to change my glasses). After the restart, I got again white screen telling me to enter 4 digits that were displayed on the screen which I did. After that everything works fine. The question that still remain unanswered is how I got into this situation in the first place.
I hope this helps. Check also HP Notebook PCs - Recovering the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) | HP® Customer Support
