I would like to take a moment and explain something which I believe this is a major flaw with the HP ZBook 15/17 G6, or anything that has the R92 firmware. And that would be the fans, I have seen some community posts on the HP Community regarding the laptop getting very hot, even when the system is idle. I have seen where some people have applied new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. As well as clean the dust off the heat sink. However, none of that is the case.
Before I owned the current system I have now (The HP ZBook 17 G6) I had a previous generation HP ZBook 17 G5, and that kept the system pretty cool. The bottom of the laptop where the CPU and GPU are, they were always at a decent temperature, when they were under a load. And it did a great job keeping itself cool when it was under load. But that is not the case with the HP ZBook 17 G6.
The HP ZBook 17 G6, starting with version 01.04.05 Rev.A, HP made some significant changes with the fans in the R92 firmware pack according to the revision history for the R92 firmware. They apparently made this change to "Reduce the high-pitch noise produced by the fan". Hmmm... Now this was not a smart thing to do on HP's part in my opinion, the reason for this is because of how hot it gets... especially when it is under a light load. Not to mention when you are in an environment with this laptop that is hot. Guess what is going to happen? It is going to make it harder for the laptop to stay cool if it can't turn the fans faster. This can greatly reduce the life of the CPU and GPU.
I am concluding this statement saying that this is a programming issue on the R92 firmware that is not speeding up the fans when it should. Which I believe is very hard on the CPU and GPU. And there are sources to back this up. Because I have seen on my personal machine where the temps on the CPU would get up to 90 degrees Celsius or above and yet the fans aren't doing much. I know these fans are good because they came from my HP ZBook 17 G5, I had to swap them because the ones that came with my G6 were shot. But either way, let me know what you guys think, because I feel like this had to be said.
