HP ProBook 4 G1iR 14 inch Notebook PC (B5VS7AV)

Hello HP Community,

We are experiencing an issue with multiple HP laptops where external monitors are not being detected when connected through a USB-C hub/docking station.

Issue details:

  • The monitors work when connected directly to the laptop (if applicable), but they are not detected through the hub/dock.
  • Other peripherals connected to the hub, such as the keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet, may continue to function normally.
  • The issue has been observed on multiple HP laptops.

Troubleshooting already performed:

  • Restarted the laptop and the docking station.
  • Power-cycled the dock.
  • Tested different HDMI /DisplayPort cables and monitors.
  • Updated Windows, graphics drivers, BIOS, and dock firmware (where applicable).
  • Tried different USB-C ports and hubs.
  • Checked the display settings (Windows + P and Display Settings > Detect).

Has anyone experienced a similar issue recently? If so, were you able to identify the root cause or find a permanent solution?

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi @sarzz

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

We understand the concern. Since you have already completed extensive troubleshooting across multiple HP laptops, docks, monitors, cables, drivers, BIOS updates, and firmware updates, that helps narrow the focus considerably.

When external displays fail only through the USB-C hub or HP docking station while USB devices, Ethernet, keyboard, and mouse continue to function, the display video path is typically where further verification is needed.

Please try the following checks:

Verify USB-C Display Capability

  • Confirm the USB-C port on the HP notebook supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt video output.
  • Some USB-C ports support data and charging only, which can allow peripherals to function while preventing video output.

Reset External Display Detection

  • Disconnect all monitors from the dock.
  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Disconnect dock power for one minute.
  • Reconnect dock power, connect a single monitor, then start the notebook.
  • Test with one display before adding additional monitors.

Check Dock Power Delivery

  • Ensure the original HP power adapter supplied for the docking station is being used.
  • Insufficient dock power can affect monitor detection even when USB peripherals continue to operate normally.

Review Graphics Configuration

  • Open Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.
  • If the system includes both integrated and discrete graphics, install the latest graphics packages provided for the notebook model.
  • Restart the system after installation.

Test Direct Video Paths on the Dock

  • If the dock provides both DisplayPort and HDMI outputs, test each type individually.
  • Some monitor and dock combinations detect more reliably on one interface than another.

Check Dock Firmware Status

  • Reapply the latest dock firmware even if it already reports as current.
  • Restart both the dock and notebook after the firmware installation completes.

Verify External Displays in BIOS

  • Connect the dock and monitor before powering on the notebook.
  • Check whether the monitor becomes active during startup or BIOS access.
  • If it appears before Windows loads, the issue may be related to operating system display enumeration rather than the hardware connection itself.

Test with a Single High-Quality USB-C Cable

  • If the dock uses a removable USB-C cable, verify it supports video, power delivery, and high-speed data.
  • A cable can allow peripherals to function while limiting display connectivity.

Confirm Display Limits

  • Verify that the notebook model, graphics solution, dock model, and monitor configuration are within the supported external display limits for resolution and monitor count.

If this behavior started recently across multiple systems after updates, it may also be worthwhile to monitor for newer BIOS, graphics, dock firmware, and Windows updates, as platform compatibility improvements are periodically released.

To help isolate the root cause further, please share:

  • HP laptop model(s)
  • HP dock model (G5, G2 Thunderbolt Dock, USB-C Dock, etc.)
  • Number of monitors connected
  • Monitor resolution(s)
  • Whether the monitors appear in Device Manager or Display Settings at all when connected through the dock

That information can help determine whether the limitation is related to the notebook, dock, graphics subsystem, display configuration, or USB-C video capabilities.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
