I have a brand new EliteBook X360 with 4G access apparently, which I wanted
The Sim card slot has a carrier for the sim card that does not have a space for the Sim Card say like a phone.
It is a solid piece of plastic.
How does that work?
It looks like a dummy piece but still not clear to me how it would fit a sim card
Any help appreciated

If it is what I think it is it is just a blank piece of plastic.
Push in on it and it should eject it's self enough to remove it.
Then insert your Sim Card.

Thanks Charles48, what you said is correct. You just push the plastic card in, and it pops out. Then you can push the sim card in.
The scary thing is one has to remember - I presume - which way the plastic one comes out, so you can feed the sim card in the correct way.

Actually I had another look at the plastic blank sim card in (my wife's new 8/256 i5/7300 256 X360 1030 G2) and in fact, the blank card is identified quite clearly.
Firstly, it has a corner cut off.
Secondly, the card has an arrow pointing into the machine .
Thirdly on the other side of the blank sim card, there is a pattern in the grey plastic with immitates the gold contact patch of a real Sim card.
So, the gold goes downwards when you slide the real Sim card in, and also looking down on the computer, the cut off corner of the sim card goes on the screen / hinge side of the notebook.
HP have done a very nice job of identifying what to do without reading a manual. Although I presume that solution is used by all companies ...
When I install the sim for my darling wife, I am not sure where I'll store the blank though ... with an Apple computer, you get a nice open and shuttable box, where you can store such items. The HP's box is not designed for keeping. I'd prefer they put in another small branded box with lettering for a bookshelf identification, where you could store the Sim blank, the CD, even the Pen if you did not use it, the paperwork etc etc. Yes, I'm an Apple guy. But hey - they don't sell a touch screen.

Thirdly on the other side of the blank sim card, there is a pattern in the grey plastic which immitates the gold contact patch of a real Sim card.
So, the gold electrical contact patch goes downwards when you slide the real Sim card in, and also looking down on the computer, the cut off corner of the sim card goes on the screen / hinge side of the notebook.
This setup is much simpler than a Sim card holder, which has one correct place for a Sim card, and three non correct places for a Sim card. By HP not using a Sim card holder, there is just one correct way (Gold down - although I have not yet put in a real Sim card), and one incorrect way. It would not be possible to put a Sim card in the reverse direction - it would not fit, so I've not included that incorrect way!!
HP have done a very nice job of identifying what to do without reading a manual. Although I presume that solution is used by all companies with external access to a SIM card ... goodness knows on how to get it to work though - I'm much more an Apple guy ...

The HP's box is not designed for keeping IMO, and its not got an easy to open and shut lid. I'd prefer pefer the cost accountants put in another small branded box with lettering for a bookshelf identification, where you could store the Sim blank, the CD, even the Pen if you did not use it, the paperwork, manuals etc etc.
