I have an HP EliteBook 2540p 4gb RAM . When the machine came to me, it was running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. I added 4gb RAM, and wish to install 64 bit Professional, but end up with the install hanging right at the "Starting Windows" screen immediately after "Windows is Loading Files". Can you help me?

You're very welcome.
I am very sure that if you can get the memory I posted on that NewEgg link, or the equivalent one the other person used, you should be just fine.

Hi:
I would remove the 4 GB of memory you purchased and see if W7 x64 installs with the original memory module.
If it does, most likely you bought an incompatible memory module.
HP notebooks with the mobile intel series 5 chipsets such as yours require very specific memory to work.
Even if the specs of the memory you bought are correct, there are other factors such as speed, voltage and density.
See this discussion for the type and brand of memory you should get, if W7 does install as expected with the new chip removed.

You're very welcome.
99% chance the memory you bought is not compatible.
Like I said...install W7 with whatever original memory chip you had when you originally got the notebook.
It has to do with the memory density. Something strange (in a bad way) must happen when you go from 4 GB to 8 GB.
Just read the discussion I posted. There are many discussions on this forum regarding the exact memory you need to get, or your notebook just will not work on 8 GB of memory.
You will need to get the exact memory in order for your notebook to work on 8 GB.
