Dear HP Support Team,

I am experiencing an intermittent keyboard issue on my HP EliteBook 840 G3.

The keyboard works normally for some time, but suddenly some keys become unresponsive. When this happens, I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, lock the laptop, and log in again. After logging back in, the keyboard starts working properly. However, the issue keeps occurring repeatedly.

Issue Details:

  • Some keyboard keys stop responding randomly.

  • Temporary fix: Locking and unlocking the system restores functionality.

  • The problem happens multiple times.

  • No physical damage or liquid spill.

System Details:

  • Model: HP EliteBook 840 G3

  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Pro

  • BIOS Version: HP N75 Ver. 01.62 (03/17/2024)

I have already tried restarting the laptop, but the issue persists.

Could you please guide me toward a permanent solution? Kindly advise whether this may be related to drivers, BIOS, Windows updates, or a hardware issue.

Thank you for your assistance.

Experiencing intermittent keyboard issues where certain keys become unresponsive can be frustrating. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help address this issue on your HP EliteBook 840 G3:

  1. Check for Dust or Debris:
  2. Inspect the keyboard for any dust, debris, or liquid spills that might prevent keys from functioning properly.
  3. Try cleaning the keyboard with compressed air to remove any particles lodged under the keys.

  4. Update Keyboard Driver:

  5. Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
  6. Enter your laptop model and go to the keyboard drivers section.
  7. Download and install the latest driver for your keyboard.

  8. Check Keyboard Settings:

  9. In Windows, go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and ensure no accessibility features are interfering with normal keyboard operations.

  10. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  11. Download the latest version of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  12. Run the keyboard test to identify any hardware issues.

  13. Check BIOS Settings:

  14. Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS setup.
  15. Ensure the BIOS is up-to-date. Sometimes, resetting the BIOS to default settings can resolve unexpected behaviors.

  16. Check Device Manager for Keyboard Errors:

  17. In Windows, search and open Device Manager.
  18. Expand Keyboards, right-click your keyboard device, and click Uninstall.
  19. Restart your laptop which will automatically reinstall the keyboard driver.

  20. Test with an External Keyboard:

  21. Connect an external USB keyboard to see if the issue persists. This helps determine if it’s a hardware or software issue.

  22. Perform System Restore:

  23. If the issue began recently, you may restore your system to a point where the keyboard was functioning properly.

  24. Professional Repair:

  25. If the problem persists after these steps, consider reaching out to HP Support or a certified technician for further diagnosis as it might be a hardware issue.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
