HI

I have a

HP EliteBook 850 G5 Notebook PC

Product: 5WN32US

And I lost the charger for it.

A computer store is offering to sell me an HP charger that has an 18.5 V 65 W output. HP part number 608425-002

Is it ok to use this charger with this laptop?

I ask because the laptop label says it needs 19.5 or 20V input.

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Hello.

It is not compatible. It is for older generation of HP laptops and has wrong type of connector (along with wrong voltage).

Depending on your laptop GPU configuration, you need either 45W or 65W power adapter. Your laptop originally came with a 65W power adapter.

If you have a discrete AMD Radeon GPU, you will need to use 65W power adapter. If you don't know whether you have AMD GPU, check the label for the amps as well: 20V 3.25A = 65 watts = 19.V 3.33A. (Voltage x Amps = Watts)

Extra power is not harmful, so you can use a 90W (or higher) power adapter as long as the voltage is correct, but more powerful adapters usually are bigger and cost more and will not charge your laptop any faster.

A power adapter with 65 watt (or more) enables also the fast charging feature (0 to 50% in 30 minutes), something that may be of benefit to you.

The following HP power adapters are specified for your laptop:

1HE07AA - HP 45W USB-C Power Adapter
1HE08AA - HP 65W USB-C Power Adapter
H6Y82AA - HP 65W Slim AC Adapter
H6Y83AA - HP 90W Slim AC Adapter
H6Y84AA - HP 90W Slim Combo AC Adapter w/ USB

Your laptop has a dedicated 4.5mm power connector at the right side, the connector nearest to display hinges. Those 19.5 Volt "Slim" adapters are for that connector.

Your laptop can also be powered through the USB-C ports, the voltage is 20 Volts in those ports. USB-C power delivery is an industry standard and you can use any USB-C power adapter as long as it provides at least the 45W / 65W required by your laptop. So it does not have to be made by HP.

So, should you go for USB-C or for the dedicater power connector?

USB-C power adapter is more versatile since you can also use it to charge tablets, phones, headset and so on. All current laptops from HP (and other manufacturers) are power by USB-C unless it's a mobile workstation that requires more power than USB-C can provide.

The only negative with USB-C is that you cannot use the USB-C port when you are charging your laptop.

Hi Jupitero - Thank you very much for taking the time to write your extensive and very helpful reply!

Thanks for pointing out the USB-C is an industry standard and then I do not have to worry about getting a specific model and so I will get a USB-C charger.
