Hello, today the keyboard in my laptop HP 15s suddenly stopped working and laptop's fan is always on since that, even if i just start the system, nothing else. I ran diagnostic test and it only shows problem with my battery. What could cause that problem? I tried unlocking keyboard with combinations like shift + fn, fn + num lock and nothing. Diode on capslock button doesn't work as well.

P. S i also checked temperature of the procesor and it shows 255 C, i dont know of It's possible.

Hi @Nightmy,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 15s laptop's keyboard suddenly stopped working, the fan is constantly on, and you're seeing abnormal temperature readings (like 255°C for the processor), it suggests there might be a hardware issue. Here's a comprehensive approach to diagnose and potentially resolve the problem:

Immediate Checks

Power Cycle the Laptop:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Remove the battery (if it's removable).
  • Hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then turn on the laptop.

External Keyboard:

  • Connect an external USB keyboard to see if it works. This will help determine if the issue is with the laptop's built-in keyboard or a broader hardware issue.

BIOS Settings:

  • Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, Delete, or Esc during startup).
  • Check if the keyboard works within the BIOS menu. If it does, the problem may be with the operating system or drivers.

Detailed Troubleshooting

Check for Overheating:

  • If the processor temperature reading is extremely high, it could indicate a faulty temperature sensor or an actual overheating issue.
  • Ensure the laptop vents are not blocked and the cooling system (fans and heatsinks) is working properly. Clean any dust buildup.

Update/Reset BIOS:

  • Download the latest BIOS update from the HP support website for your specific laptop model.
  • Follow the instructions to update the BIOS. Sometimes, resetting the BIOS to default settings can also resolve hardware issues.

Driver Issues:

  • Boot into Safe Mode (press F8 or Shift + F8 during startup) and check if the keyboard works.
  • If it does, the issue might be related to a driver conflict. Update the keyboard driver from the Device Manager:
    • Press Windows key + X and select "Device Manager".
    • Expand "Keyboards", right-click on your keyboard, and select "Update driver".
    • Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software".

Hardware Diagnostic Test:

  • Run HP's built-in hardware diagnostics again to check for other hardware issues.
  • If it only shows a problem with the battery, it’s still possible there could be related issues with the power delivery to the keyboard.

Check Keyboard Connection:

  • If you're comfortable opening the laptop, you can check the internal connection of the keyboard to the motherboard. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause the keyboard to stop working.

Operating System Reinstallation:

  • As a last resort, consider backing up your data and performing a clean installation of your operating system. This can rule out any software conflicts causing the keyboard malfunction.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
