HP EliteBook 840 G6 Notebook PC

A few days ago I replaced my laptop's SSD. Since then, the boot process has become unstable:

1. I press the power button - it turns on briefly, then shuts off after a few seconds.
2. On the next, the keyboard backlight flashes once, then only Caps Lock LED stays lit (not blinking).
3. After a few more power cycles, the F11 key LED lights up.
4. Once F11 becomes stable, F5 and F8 key LEDs also start lighting up.
5. When F5, F8, and F11 are all lit together, the fan starts spinning.
6. After repeating this cycle a few times, the HP logo finally appears and Windows boots normally.

Once Windows loads, the laptop works fine with no issues.

The issue still persists. Could this be a BIOS incompatibility with the new SSD, a loose connection, or a hardware fault? Any help identifying the exact cause would be appreciated.

Hi  @NaziaNaziaaa

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I can understand your concern, especially since the issue started shortly after the SSD replacement. I'm glad to hear that once Windows loads, the notebook operates normally.

To help us better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm a few details?

  • Is the SSD you installed an HP-certified SSD or a third-party SSD?
  • What is the exact SSD  capacity currently installed?
  • Did the notebook function normally before the SSD replacement?
  • If you reinstall the original SSD (if available), does the startup behavior change?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

  1. Verify that the SSD is properly seated in the M.2 slot and that the retaining screw is secure.
  2. Enter the BIOS (press F10 during startup) and confirm that the SSD is consistently detected under the storage section.
  3. Load BIOS defaults:
    • Press F10 to enter BIOS.
    • Select Restore Defaults or Setup Defaults.
    • Save changes and restart.
  4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics: Click here for steps
    • Turn off the notebook.
    • Press the Power button and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
    • Run the Storage Test and System Extensive Test.
  5. Perform a hard reset: Click here for steps
    • Shut down the notebook.
    • Disconnect the AC adapter.
    • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect power and start the notebook.

Based on the symptoms you've described, the behavior could be related to SSD compatibility, a connection issue, BIOS configuration, or a hardware initialization delay during POST. The results of the BIOS detection check and HP Hardware Diagnostics will help narrow down the cause.

I hope this helps.
