HP ZBook Create G7 Notebook PC (8YP92AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My gpu (rtx 2070 super with max-Q) and cpu (i7-10850H) are well good enough for gaming at least at 1080p/60 fps.

But whenever I run a game the FPS never goes past 40 even at the lowest settings.

The clock speed is below 1000MHz, the gpu wattage never goes past 30W and also the gpu core voltage is locked at 0.606V.

I have tried reinstalling drivers via DDU, tweaking Nvidia settings to maximum performance, and undervolting seemed to cut the clock speed in half.

I'm at my wits end here so I really need some help.

Hello KariminO,
Good day. Thank you for reaching out to the Hp community. I will be happy to assist you here. Brilliant troubleshooting and dedication to try and resolve the issue. Kudos to you for that.

If you are experiencing low frames per second (FPS) in applications or games despite your GPU showing maximum usage on your HP ZBook Create G7, consider the following troubleshooting steps to address possible causes:

  1. Update Graphics Drivers:

  2. Check Thermal Management:

    • Excessive heat can throttle performance. Ensure your laptop is not overheating by checking for adequate ventilation and cleaning any dust from the vents and fans.
    • Consider using a cooling pad to improve airflow.
  3. Power Settings:

    • Verify your power plan settings are set to "High Performance." You can find this option by going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  4. Close Background Applications:

    • Ensure that unnecessary applications are closed to maximize available system resources for your GPU.
  5. Check for Bottlenecks:

    • Review CPU and RAM usage to ensure that they are not the cause of the bottleneck. If necessary, optimize applications or upgrade hardware if feasible.
  6. Game/Application Settings:

    • Lower the in-game graphical settings like resolution, anti-aliasing, and shadow quality that may exceed the capabilities of the hardware or cause throttling.
  7. BIOS and Firmware Updates:

    • Check for BIOS or firmware updates that might include performance improvements for your model. This can be done through the HP Support Assistant or the HP website.
  8. HP Performance Advisor:

    • Use HP Performance Advisor, if installed, to check system performance metrics and get recommendations to improve performance.
  9. NVIDIA Control Panel Settings:

    • Check your NVIDIA Control Panel settings to ensure that the GPU is set to handle rendering tasks rather than the integrated graphics.
  10. Contact HP Support:

    • If the problem remains unresolved after these steps, consider contacting HP Support for a detailed analysis and professional help.
