I would like to increase the storage space on my HP ProBook 470 G5 Notebook PC. When I open the small cover (after opening the large cover) on the back, it looks like there is an expansion slot for a 2nd drive. Would it be possible to know the specification for this drive and the max GB it will support so I can use it? If there are multiple supported formats, perhaps some additional information about the advantages and pitfalls of each.

Hello.
Your laptop can house two different types of storage drives. Behind the drive door you opened are slots for both. The larger one is for a standard 2.5 inch SATA drives, either SSD or HDD. SSD are better in every way except they may be more expensive.
There is also space for a smaller M.2 2280 drive, which can be either SATA or NVMe drives. NVMe is more modern technology and its availability is better than SATA these days. NVMe (PCIe) has several versions and your laptop has PCIe 3.0 bus which is compatible with NVMe 4 or (latest) NVMe 5 drives but there is no benefit to using them. Which ever drive you opt for, make sure it is 2280 in size and it must not have heat sink.
So, identify first which drive you already have and then either go for the M.2 or 2.5" drive.
Illustrated installation instruction are in the Maintenance and Service Guide for your laptop model.
