Bought a new HP Pro Mini Desktop, obviously it comes with Windows 11 and HP Wolf Security. As I was going through the motions of setting everything up I noticed that there are already exclusions under Windows Security/Defender.

Has anyone else recently bought a new HP and know about these exclusions?

@hulanpo1,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Thank you for asking -yes, seeing exclusions in Windows Defender on a new HP Pro Mini Desktop (with Windows 11 + HP Wolf Security preinstalled) is normal.

What is happening is this: HP's security software (Wolf) is designed to run either alongside or instead of Microsoft Defender, and to avoid conflicts it adds certain exclusions automatically (and sometimes disables or hands off Defender’s full control).

Here's what to verify:

  • Go to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings → Exclusions and review what is listed. If most entries are HP/Wolf-related folders or executables, that's exactly what one would expect.

  • Check whether HP Wolf Security is installed and active: open it and review its console/settings.

  • Decide whether you're comfortable with the Wolf + Defender combination or whether you prefer to revert to only Defender. If you prefer only Defender, uninstall Wolf (via Apps & features) and ensure Defender is set as the primary protection.

A few cautions:

  • Some HP machines ship with a 1-year or 3-year license of Wolf's "pro" features. After that period, you may need to renew, or you'll revert to a basic mode. See HP's documentation for your product.

  • If you uninstall Wolf, check that the exclusions list in Defender is cleaned up (or at least doesn't contain active entries you no longer want).

  • Always keep your definitions, BIOS, and drivers up to date.

In short: nothing to worry about, but good on you for checking.

Kind Regards,
