Hello kk370,

Thank you for posting your concern,

It sounds like you're experiencing ongoing audio issues with your HP EliteBook 840 G4 after attempting an upgrade and rollback of the operating system. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this problem:

  1. Check Sound Settings:

    • Ensure that the sound settings are correctly configured. Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar, select "Open Sound settings," and check that the correct playback device is selected.
  2. Use the Audio Troubleshooter:

    • Windows has a built-in audio troubleshooter that can help diagnose and fix common sound issues. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot and select Playing Audio.
  3. Update BIOS:

    • Ensure that your BIOS is updated to the latest version. An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause hardware compatibility issues. Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads to find the latest BIOS update for your model.
  4. Reinstall Audio Drivers:

    • Uninstall the audio driver from the Device Manager and restart your notebook. This can allow Windows to automatically reinstall the correct driver upon restart.
    • Sometimes, installing an older version of the driver can also help. Use the HP support website to download a prior version of the audio drivers if available.
  5. Disable Audio Enhancements:

    • Go to Sound settings, select your playback device, click on Properties, and under the Enhancements tab, try disabling audio enhancements.
  6. Check for Windows Updates:

    • Make sure that Windows is up-to-date. Sometimes, Windows updates can resolve hardware compatibility issues.

If the problem persists after attempting these steps, it might be an indication of a hardware issue, in which case contacting HP Customer Support for further assistance would be advisable. They can provide specific guidance based on detailed diagnostics.
