To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with what should have been one of the simplest technology tasks imaginable: installing and using an HP printer with scanning functionality.

I have worked in IT and technology for decades. I manage networks, servers, software systems, cloud services, and complex technical infrastructure. Yet installing this HP printer has been one of the most frustrating and unnecessarily complicated technology experiences I have encountered in many years.

What should have been a straightforward process turned into hours of failed installations, software errors, account requirements, repeated downloads, driver issues, unexplained failures, and endless troubleshooting. At almost every step, the HP software appeared determined to create obstacles rather than help the user achieve the simple goal of printing and scanning documents.

The most alarming part is that this is not an advanced enterprise product. This is a consumer printer. A device that should be usable by ordinary people with minimal technical knowledge. If someone with extensive technical experience finds the process confusing, unreliable, and frustrating, I can only imagine how difficult it must be for less technical customers.

The HP Smart ecosystem appears to prioritise account creation, cloud integration, registrations, updates, and software layers over the basic functionality customers actually purchase the product for. I bought a printer and scanner. I did not expect to spend hours fighting software just to perform basic tasks.

The installation process felt bloated, fragile, and poorly engineered. Multiple errors provided little useful information. Several stages appeared to fail without explanation. Troubleshooting advice often led in circles rather than toward a solution. The overall experience left me with very little confidence in HP's software quality assurance process.

Frankly, I am astonished that a company of HP's size and reputation considers this an acceptable customer experience.

The hardware itself may be perfectly capable, but the software experience surrounding it is among the worst I have encountered from a major technology manufacturer. Instead of being productive, I found myself wasting valuable time dealing with problems that should never have existed in the first place.

I would strongly encourage HP to revisit the design philosophy behind its printer software. Customers should be able to install a printer, connect it, print, and scan without creating accounts, navigating multiple applications, or dealing with repeated failures and cryptic error messages.

Technology should simplify people's lives. In this case, HP's software has done exactly the opposite.

I hope this feedback reaches the teams responsible for product design, software engineering, and customer experience, because there is significant room for improvement.

Sincerely,

Rod Evans

Hello @Rodevans1972, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP Officejet 8125e printer.

We appreciate the opportunity to assist you and are glad we could help work toward a resolution. We hope our support has been valuable.

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please try a few troubleshooting steps provided below so that I can assist you further?

Step 1: Reset the Printer to Setup Mode

This ensures we start with a clean configuration.

  • Turn the printer ON.
  • Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel (X) buttons together for about 5 seconds until the wireless light begins flashing.
  • This indicates the printer is back in setup mode.

Step 2: Perform a Clean Driver and App Reset (Windows/Mac)

On your computer:

  • Uninstall HP Smart and any existing HP printer software.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download the latest version of HP Smart from:
    https://www.hp.com/go/hpsmart

Step 3: Simplify Network Setup

  • Ensure your computer is connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (not 5 GHz or guest network).
  • Temporarily disable VPNs, firewalls, or security software that may block discovery.
  • Open HP Smart → Add Printer and follow the prompts.

Step 4: Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows Only)

This tool bypasses many software-layer issues:

Step 5: Test Scan Using Alternate Method

To avoid HP Smart dependency temporarily:

  • Press Windows + S → type “Windows Scan”
  • Select your printer and attempt a scan

This confirms whether the issue is software-related vs device-related.

Step 6: Optional – Add Printer via IP

To bypass discovery issues altogether:

  • Find printer IP from the control panel or network report
  • Go to: Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Add Printer → The printer that I want isn’t listed → Add using TCP/IP address
  • Enter the IP and complete setup

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
