HP ZBook Fury 16 G9 Mobile Workstation PC (609M2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi everyone,

I’ve been experiencing issues with my HP Workstation ever since I bought it about two years ago. Occasionally, the system will completely freeze — everything stops responding, including the sound — for a few seconds. After that, it goes back to normal and runs fine for hours, until the freeze happens again at random.

At first, I assumed it was a Windows 11 issue, but if it were a software bug, I think Microsoft would have fixed it by now.

A few weeks ago, by coincidence, I downloaded a tool to check the health of an old hard drive. To my surprise, it showed that my internal SSD was the one in poor condition and advised me to back up my data immediately. I ran HP Support Assistant afterward, but it reported that everything was fine. Shortly after, Windows itself warned me that the SSD was showing signs of failure and needed replacement — yet HP Support Assistant still didn’t recommend any action or service.

I continued using the workstation as usual, but I noticed it started overheating whenever the discrete NVIDIA GPU was in use — reaching around 80°C (176°F) — and the freezing issue became more frequent.

Recently, a new problem appeared. Whenever I open a game or any program that uses the GPU, I get severe screen glitches and artifacts. It’s hard to describe in words, but I recorded a short video showing exactly what happens:

As for the freezing bug, I couldn’t record it since everything, including the screen, completely locks up during the freeze.

I bought this workstation in the U.S., and the warranty is still active.

Could someone please advise what I should say or include when contacting HP Support to help them diagnose the issue more effectively? And if anyone has insights into what might have caused these problems — SSD failure, overheating, or GPU issues — I’d really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You laptop is overheating: both the GPU and the SSD.

Get the dust bunnies out of the laptop.
Charge the battery fully before running any intensive applications. Your laptop will overheat if it has to both charge and run at turbo speed.  To mitigate the heat problem you should use a laptop cooler.

In the Advanced Power Plan, set the percent processor utilization to %99 instead of %100 to prevent going into turbo. This can make a huge difference in temperature for the CPU (not gpu)

Obtain technical date (temperature etc) about your SSD use the free program Hard Disk Sentinel.

Go here, select windows 11, 24h2, and ensure you  have

latest BIOS and other drivers

I already cleaned all the air ways and fans (I usually do) and still, the fans run on a high speed.

I might try this solution but first I need to address the issue at hand. I think there is permanent damage to motherboard as a result of overheating.
