I also have this problem. Just got the laptop yesterday and I will send it back to my vendor. Actually I cannot even install windows Update 1803. Trying to do so I get this message:
Installation of windows 10 is not possible

Microsoft: The pc hardware is not supported by this version of windows 10. For more information address to your pc-builder.

I experience the same problem with CPU load being taken by "System" up to 30% til 50%. Furthermore the fan ist really loud running at approx 70%.

As it is the 25th of may today it does not seem that the new Cumulative Update for WIndows 1803 named by JK80 in 05-24-2018 11:06 really does make a difference

Hi,

I have created a support request for this, and after several unsuccessful attempts, this still seems to have helped.

(NOTE: windows have been automatically updated to 1803, before ms blocked this update due problems with SSD, and notebook ended in blue death - therefore clean installation. - 1803 is not supported at HP 450 G5 yet)

step 1) create USB instalation disk via HP cloud recovery, switch boot mode to Legacy in BIOS and install OS.

step 2) install HP drivers from from this install disk ... maybe 6 reboots :((

step 2) follow this procedure provided by HP:

Spoiler

Please reset to the default configuration power option, if not help please perform next steps:
Need to update drivers from Intel site for:
       1. Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology
       2. Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software
       3. Intel(R) PRO/Wireless Driver
       4. Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)
       5. Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620
For most cases updating drivers to the latest is solve this issue.

After reseting to default configuration power option, the problem has not yet appeared. I will be glad, when this annoying banality will be resolved by this.

Edit: so this did not help, problem is still there.

I updated to windows 1803 manually with official installer (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 ) . In automatic updates it doesn't show (probably blocked by M$)

HP technical support wrote to me:

Spoiler

... If yes then this unit is not supported for 1803 version upadte as of now. This unit has Intel P6000 SSD for which the WIn 10 1803 update is blocked by Microsoft. ANd currently customer need to use the factory shipped OS version on this. Need to wait until automatic update notification comes.

so, that's why I installed the OS supplied by HP

Besides: It is NOT possible to update the videocard drivers either ! When I try this via the intel page i get the message, that HP has "tampered" with the original intel drivers and that i thus is not possible to use the standard intel drivers. Unbeliveable!

Let us summarize:

Video card driver update not possible due to manipulated or "spesific" video card drivers

Fan partly running at very high speed with corresponding inacceptable noise

CPU load partly rather high at round 30% til 50% due to unknwon reason which after months of complaints still neither has been found nor eliminated

Update to lastest windows 10 not possible due to driver problems with the intel NVME SSD

Really a bad balance sheet... :-(!

How can I trust that this hardware ever will work that way I want it to?

In my case, support gave up other investigation and ticket was forwarded to other department. I expect offer with money refund or offer with replacing ProBook to another type. The question is: do they (HP) want really solve the problem or not?

Based on FNode's observation with PCI Express Root Port #12, I looked what is located at this port. It's the Realtek PCIE CardReader.

So I tried one last think. I downloaded the latest driver from Realtek's homepage to see, if maybe it's this device. I updated the driver to 10.0.16299.21305. But after that I had a peak in CPU Usage. But date of driver differs from date of homepage.  Feb. vs. Mar. So I decided to manually update it (Update Driver -> search on computer for drivers -> Select from a list of available drivers) an uncheck "show compatible hardware".

I selected Version 10.0.16299.29095. CardReader is still working. I shutdown the PC with FastBoot enabled several times. I put it to sleep and hibernate, and until now I was lucky.

Can maybe somebody tries this. Maybe as a last try.

I also updated the driver, but using the first option (search on internet for drivers, not on local computer). It updated driver automatically to 10.0.16299.21304 and since that no high CPU.

I don't want to be more optistic than necessary 🙂 , but new drivers for Realtek card reader seem to solve the problem 😉 I was using my ProBook 450 G5 for the last 3 days with many sleep modes and it runs OK without high CPU usage. JK80, thank you for your "investigation of Port #12"!  😉

If everything is working, than all thanks should go to FNode, because he found out, that disabling Port #12, disables the High CPU Usage. :generic:
