HP EliteBook 850 G3
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

I'm trying to change the BIOS password on a HP EliteBook 850 G3 (newest BIOS installed) with the newest Bios Configuration Utility (4.0.24.1) and it fails.

I'm getting the Error 10 (wrong Password). But it is 100% correct.

When I try to change BIOS settings on this machine it fails with the following error:

<BIOSCONFIG Version="" Computername="XXXXXX" Date="2018/03/07" Time="15:11:44" UTC="1">
ERROR:  <ERROR msg="Unable to decrypt password file: C:\temp\pwtest.bin" />
Error during CryptAcquireContext. LastError = 0x80090345
        <ERROR msg="Unable to process command. Password is set, but password provided is invalid" />
        <ERROR msg="BCU return value" real="10" translated="10" />

When I try to create a password .bin file on this client I get this error:

ERROR: Error during CryptAcquireContext. LastError = 0x80090345

Does anyone have an idea to solve this problem?

Thank you and kind regards
Christian

Not the same message, but maybe it could also be related to the same Intel Management Engine stuff

https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1979151-hp-bios-configuration-utility

The error message number is from Windows Credential Manager, maybe you can find something with Google

Make sure you have Fast boot disabled in BIOS in case something goes wrong. You might not be able to recover the password with an SMC.BIN file (seeing the HP logo while booting is a good sign)

Thanks for the reply. But that didn't fix my problem. Any ideas?

I suppose you have also tried to change the password manually and then regenerate the password file and tried again and the same error?

Yes of course. Same error.

Seems this question has been asked twice before on this forum with no answer :Crying:

A silly guestion, you are running the tests from an admin account, right?

Seems similar errors have been pestering some Outlook and Dropbox users but I have no idea if the discussion and remedies are still valid:

Here's one more link to a solution in a case relating to Mail issues:

Sorry to have to send you to a Internet sightseeing trip but as I have no clue and my computer has never been to a domain so it's all guessing from my part at this point.

One more thing came to mind.

I have no idea whether the service interacts with the TPM in the computer, but it should not hurt to make sure you have all the latest updates from HP and then reset the TPM in BIOS.

Of course you have to be careful if you have encrypted drives etc. so that you don't loose them by mistake.
