Hello,

I have an HP USB-C Dock G5 docking station, but unfortunately, I have misplaced the original 120W power adapter. Currently, I only have a 90W power adapter at hand, and the docking station refuses to function with it.

I am reaching out to inquire if there is a specific power requirement for the HP USB-C Dock G5, and if the docking station is designed to work only with a 120W adapter. Is there any limitation that restricts the use of a 90W adapter, or could there be a potential issue with the docking station itself?

Before purchasing a new 120W adapter, I would like to gather some insights from the community to ensure that the docking station is not faulty. If anyone has experience with this or can provide guidance on the power requirements for the HP USB-C Dock G5, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Best regards

Hello.

Not all Watts are equal. The power supply for your dock must provide 19.5 Volts and 6.15 Amps  = 120 Watts.

A power supply with e.g. 24 Volts and 5 Amps also equals 120 Watts but would not work with your dock, instead it could release the magic smoke inside.

L41423-001 is the HP part number that the dock came with, and would be the ideal part.

If you want to use a 3rd party power supply... as long as the power supply is 19.5V / 6.15 A with the correct size barrel connector and with the positive voltage on the center pole, there should be no reason for it not to work. Extra amps on a power supply is not a problem as long as all the other characteristics are correct.

Hello,

Certainly, I have tried the docking station with the original HP adapter that provides 19.5 volts. I am aware that using more volts could potentially damage the docking station. To clarify my question, the docking station originally came with a 120W adapter (19.5V / 6.15A), which I unfortunately lost. Currently, I have an original HP adapter with the same voltage (19.5) and connector, but with a power output of only 90W (so 4.62 A). Unfortunately, the docking station does not work with this adapter.

A power adapter of this strength is primarily for charging the notebook through the power supply. My ultrabook does not require more than 65W, so theoretically, 90W should be sufficient for both powering the notebook and the docking station's "overhead." Surprisingly, the docking station does not function with the 90W adapter. This surprised me because, for example, the notebook or even the phone charges normally using a charger with lower output (Amperes) than the original or maximum.

I have now ordered a new original 120W adapter, and I hope the docking station will be functional with it.
