I own a HP EliteBook 840 G2 notebook. Upon power on the screen with "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete" is all it has been displaying for over 3 hours.

Hi,

Most likely the Hard Drive has a problem.

 

I would replace the 2.5" HDD with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD and then reinstall the OS on it. This will also give a great boost to the everyday performance of the notebook.

On page 60 of service manual you can see the steps to install the drive

Create a USB drive with the OS on it and reinstall
