I have an HP Elite x360 1040 Notebook connected to a HP Thunderbolt 120W G4 dock, which in turn connects to a monitor with HDMI. My setup use both the external monitor and Notebook screen.
After upgrading the docking firmware from 1.3.12.0 to 1.4.20.0, I could no longer use both screens simultaneously, the resolution on the external monitor is wrong and cannot be changed.
Solutions that don't work:
* Once upgraded to 1.4, it is not possible to downgrade firmware to earlier than 1.4.16, which does not solve the problem
* When an external monitor cannot be connected at its full resolution, a possible solution is to enter BIOS setup and select
"Enable High Resolution mode when connected to USB-C DP alt mode dock"
This comes at the cost of downgrading USB ports from USB 3 to 2 and made no difference in my case.
Solution that works:
It turns out that the problem persists when the external monitor is connected directly to the notebook, bypassing the G4 dock entirely. It appears as if HP's firmware updater has messed up something on the notebook itself. The solution is to use Windows' "System Restore" to restore the notebook to a point before the firmware installer was loaded. System Restore is not to be confused with rolling back windows updates. System Restore is unfortunately not always enabled by default in Windows 11.
