I'm trying to connect a docking station using a USB-A (male) to USB-C (female) Adapter (STRIKELINE). No success - no power to the the docking USB-C end nor does my computer recognize anything connected. Any suggestions how to make this work or why it doesn't work? Would a USB-C to HDMI 9 (male) adapter be a better solution? I have (4) USB-A and (1) HDMI port available.

I can't find your machine (M7-j078). It should be very close to the following machine
https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c04085233
which shows it has
External Ports | Multi-format digital media card reader for Secure Digital cards 4 SuperSpeed USB 3.0, 1 supporting USB Boost 1 HDMI 1 RJ-45 (LAN) 1 Headphone-out/microphone-in combo jack |
It does not have USB-C port therefore USB-C is out.
What is your docking station ?
Regards.

Yes I have the ports noted below.
I'm aware there isn't a USB-C port however, I have an appropriate adapter/dongle for USB-C (female) to USB-A (male) from the docking station (Dell K17A) to laptop. It's not working. When I use the adapter configuration on a Dell laptop, I get the same results - it doesn't work.

OK, just forget the Dell dock. It is not compatible with your computer. If you wish to have 2 or more external monitors (and notebook monitor - total 3), please enter your requirement on the following link and it will find for you few USB-A DisplayLink Certified options on market today including some HP products (you can select HP before Search)
