I'm attempting to update the BIOS on my HP Elite x2 G3, but I'm encountering two persistent issues:

Using HP Support Assistant:
The update appears to proceed correctly on the OS side and prompts me to reboot. However, instead of launching the BIOS update process after restarting, the system simply reboots into Windows as normal — no BIOS update occurs.

Using USB Recovery Media:
When I try updating via a bootable USB drive, the system enters a USB-C firmware update loop. It repeatedly attempts the same firmware update without making any progress or proceeding to the actual BIOS update.

Additionally, when I attempt to use the "Update System and Supported Device Firmware" option from within the BIOS, the system just reboots with no further action.

My current BIOS version is: 01.29.01

I'd appreciate any help resolving this, and any guidance on what options are available to complete the BIOS update successfully. Thank you!

I had the same issue. I finally succeeded to update. This is what I did:

1: I created a usb flash drive according to the instructions on this page:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4123786-2338478-16

2: I downloaded the appropriate BIOS file manually from HP support.

3: On the usb drive in the folder HP/DEVFW I deleted the firmware.BIN file and copied the downloaded firmware file to the folder and renamed it to firmware.BIN

4: I also renamed the usb drive to HP_TOOLS, although I'm not sure if this is necessary.

5: I started up the laptop pressing ESC repeatedly to enter the Startup Menu. I put in the usb drive

and selected Update System and Supported Device Firmware

Be sure to leave the usb drive in during the several restarts. When the update was finished the computer rebooted into Windows.

I had the same issue, (update loop during the USB-C update process) but finally resolved this issue.

(Basically similar as ReindeVries solution, but the package contains the correct bios file, not necessary to search and download separately on hp support page)

The issue caused something in the firmware update USB disk making process.

Firmware.exe that the disk maker tool made is damaged, or corrupted.

My procedure:

1. Download the correct bios update package (contains the correct bios, but not copied well to the USB drive automatically)

2. Run the package file and make the recovery USB drive.

3. Go to the folder where the temporary files were extracted.

4. Copy the Q87_013200.bin (now this is the latest version) to the USB disk HP/DEVFW folder.

5. Rename Q87_013200.bin (smaller file 23.690KB than that automatically made by the disk tool 23.8xxKB) to "Firmware.bin" and overwrite the original firmware.bin file.

6. Restart the machine and choose the "Update System and Supported Device Firmware" in bios startup menu.

(Not sure it matters or not, but I renamed the USB drive to HP_TOOLS and restored the bios to factory default before the bios update process)
