Why does HP want to install: HP - Extension - 8.10.29.1 when 8.10.42.190 is already installed?

Is there a way to stop this forced "update".  A RESTART notice is waiting for me to activate it.

The brightness  hotkeys finally work with the 42.190 extension level s/w.

I don't want to go backwards.

Thanx - Bob

It may be too late to stop it now but you can reinstall 8.10.42.190 from the support page, and with that version installed, immediately run the Microsoft Hide Windows Update utility that I zipped up and attached below.

Unzip and run the utility.

It will find any pending updates waiting to install.

It should find the HP - Extension - 8.10.29.1 waiting to install again.

Check the box to hide the update.

The utility will run again and then report the problem is 'Fixed.'

Restart the notebook and the 8.10.29.1 should not reappear.

Thanx. I thought of that too.

I removed the update in the windows update file.  Not sure what will happen now.

Still wonder why HP is pushing this.  It's like they are not interrogating the s/w status or not looking correctly.

I created a Restore point JIC.

You're very welcome.

Yes, I don't understand why the older version wants to install over the new one.

That happens on a few drivers...graphics, touchpad and whatnot, and they invariably mess up whatever is working.

All I know is that these offending updates will probably never be removed from the Windows update system.

I found this:

Maybe I should go back to the future.

That document seems to indicate that you should install the latest software from your notebook's support page, which you already did.

I did find a newer version of the software on the 450 G7 support page which is 8.10.46.337 and it shows the previous version is the one you currently have installed (8.10.42.190).

So, maybe that updated software will also work for your notebook too.
