Will the Nvidia Quadro M2200 work in an HP Elitebook 8770W? If not what are other good MXM-A cards compatible with the HP Elitebook 8770W that were made after its original launch? Is there a better AMD card with more RAM that still fits in the confines of the smaller heat sink.

Also I found the Nvidia type heatsink for the 8770W online so I could buy that part and use the larger MXM-B type cards, I don't see anyway around that if the M2200 won't work. I know the manual says it tops out at the AMD FirePro M5950 XT-GL. Looking at the specs I think I must have a different model or one that was refurbished by a 3rd party before I got it. The M4000 that is in it now seems to be better than the AMD FirePro M5950 XT-GL. The M4000 is supposed to have 2GB apparently but mine only has 1GB of vram. That's why I would like to know if the Quadro M2200 could be a  possible upgrade for this notebook or is that going to be a problem due to that being a Dell specific card. I'm willing to flash the video BIOS if necessary to get a newer card  to work.

What are my  upgrade options for the HP Elitebook 8770W graphics card. The fact that is has a removable GPU is just cool as hell. I'm willing to buy the larger heat sink to replace my smaller MXM-A  version if that's what it takes to update the GPU  in this beast. I really like the laptop, works good like it is but I just want to max it out. It's a hobby you could say, keeps it out of the landfill and I'll have a nice back up computer to boot.  The manual just shows the now kind of out of date Quadro 3,4,and 50000M's as options that it came with but there are better MXM-A and B cards available today. In fact those cards are not very good at all compared to the ones that apparently can work in the 8770w. All the newer cards can't all be bios locked  can they?

I seen some post say I can use an M4000M or even the M5010M in there and that's an upgrade for sure, even if they won't work at PCIe 3.0 speed. The QM77 chipset says it supports up to PCIe2.0 😞  If it exist are there any MXM type A cards that are better than the AMD M4000 that will actually run in the 8770w.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Britton_Burton.

Since one of the forum members right here got (an even older than yours) 8740w working with a M4000M, it's almost a sure bet that you can do it too. You can "jump" on that thread https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Graphic-upgrade-temperature-se..., and see if you can get some advice/guidance from him.

Your system could possibly be upgraded to a M5000M, but in that case we're talking about some very heavy modding skills.... 8770w compatible video cards.
