Hi @jtudisco
If your HP ProBook 640 G2 does not completely shut down and the fan keeps running, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Force Shutdown:
- Press and hold the power button for about 5-10 seconds until the laptop turns off completely. Then, restart to see if the issue persists on the next shutdown.

Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure your operating system is up to date as some updates may resolve issues related to shutdown.

Power and Sleep Settings:
- Navigate to
Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Power Options. - Click on
Choose what the power buttons do. - Ensure that the settings are appropriately configured for shutdown and not set to hibernate or sleep.

Disable Fast Startup:
- Go to
Control Panel>Power Options. - Click on
Choose what the power buttons do. - Click on

Shutdown settings, uncheck theTurn on fast startupoption. ClickSave changes.

Check for Software Interference:
- Some programs may interfere with shutdown. Perform a clean boot to determine if this is the case:

Windows + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - Under the
Servicestab, checkHide all Microsoft services, then clickDisable all. - Under the
Startuptab, clickOpen Task Managerand disable all startup items. - Restart the computer and try shutting down again.

BIOS Update:
- An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause issues with hardware behavior, like shutdown processes. Visit the HP support website to check for and update your system BIOS.

- Open Task Manager by pressing
Ctrl + Shift + Escand check if there are any processes consuming high resources. End these tasks before attempting to shut down.

- Ensure that the fan and laptop are free of dust and debris, which can cause overheating and prevent shutdown.
