Hi @jtudisco

If your HP ProBook 640 G2 does not completely shut down and the fan keeps running, follow these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Force Shutdown:

    • Press and hold the power button for about 5-10 seconds until the laptop turns off completely. Then, restart to see if the issue persists on the next shutdown.
  2. Check for Windows Updates:

    • Ensure your operating system is up to date as some updates may resolve issues related to shutdown.
  3. Power and Sleep Settings:

    • Navigate to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
    • Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Ensure that the settings are appropriately configured for shutdown and not set to hibernate or sleep.
  4. Disable Fast Startup:

    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
    • Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    • Under Shutdown settings, uncheck the Turn on fast startup option. Click Save changes.
  5. Check for Software Interference:

    • Some programs may interfere with shutdown. Perform a clean boot to determine if this is the case:
      • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
      • Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
      • Under the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager and disable all startup items.
      • Restart the computer and try shutting down again.
  6. BIOS Update:

    • An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause issues with hardware behavior, like shutdown processes. Visit the HP support website to check for and update your system BIOS.
  7. Check for Processes Preventing Shutdown:

    • Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc and check if there are any processes consuming high resources. End these tasks before attempting to shut down.
  8. Hardware Concerns:

    • Ensure that the fan and laptop are free of dust and debris, which can cause overheating and prevent shutdown.
    • Check if there is any external device connected that might prevent a proper shutdown.

I hope this helps!
