HP EliteBook 860 16 inch G10 Notebook PC (6V8W4AV)

hello, when my notebook is not used long time I am not able to switch it on without to use power adapter. Last time laptop was not used 34 days. When I press power button nothing happens. When I attach power adapter, laptop starts and I can see battery is on 70%. The behaviour is from the time when I bought it last october.

When purchasing a new laptop, it's important to test it thoroughly so as to see if everything is in working order, and if possible catch any malfunctions from the very start. Since this issue has to do with your Elitebook being completely powered off, we can dismiss problems with the OS (Windows), drivers, etc. The BIOS (UEFI firmware) could be to blame, but if a BIOS version had a bug like this we would have seen many reports of this. But still, it would be interesting to know if you have ever upgraded the BIOS on your system. This is one of the rare occasions where I would suggest visiting your laptop's Support page and reinstalling a BIOS version.

 

The issue you described reminds me of Battery Shipping/Ship Mode as described in this previous and current document. What this mode does is "virtually" disconnect the battery from the system even though it's still connected to it. The motherboard behaves as though the battery has been removed. So pressing the power button without an AC adapter does nothing (no power to the system). To re-enable the battery and get it back online, you just need to connect the AC adapter. To me it seems that your system has some malfunction that -when left unused for a long time- puts it in a "Ship Mode" kind of state.

 

The G8 and especially the post-G8 Business laptops have very elaborate motherboard designs with an unusually high number of capacitors. These capacitors also have the function of safeguard mechanisms. Since the problem you're experiencing started from the day you bought the system, it's more than probable that one of these capacitors. or some other part of the motherboard, is misbehaving. Therefore it is important that you take it to an Authorized HP Service center and leave it there as long as it takes for them to replicate the bug. You might need a motherboard replacement, and it's imperative that you go for it while you still have an active warranty....
