Hello,

Just a curious question for anyone reading this. Are there any good fanless laptops that are Windows OS and are not Apple, Chromebook, or a tablet of any kind shape or form? I'm browsing new laptops for a future purchase and would like to know if anyone can name a good quality laptop that is fanless, not Apple, Chromebook, or a tablet.

This is actually a really good question STKL08.

The problem lies in the fact that "fanless" systems aren't laptops just missing the CPU/GPU fan, they're systems that are so heavily underpowered they have no need for a cooling (an active one at least) mechanism. So that means that they are ALWAYS (and I do mean always) tablets or, at best, glorified tablets in the shape and size of laptops. Therefore it depends on what you mean by "good fanless laptop". I'd stay away from these systems, unless I only wanted to use them as glorified typewriters.

On the bright side, you can turn a normal laptop into a (sort of) fanless system depending on the fan (BIOS) profile used by the manufacturer and by tweaking its settings. For example, I own a Probook 640 (14inch screen) G8 with a 4core TigerLake CPU and the Iris Xe Graphics, and I've managed to turn it into a fanless Probook 640 G8. On this system, the fan only starts moving at all after the CPU reaches 60 degrees Celsius, so I've basically used Throttlestop to force the CPU into a TDP 1 level (also known as TDP-down) and some of the hidden windows power options to limit the GPU and the fast PCIe storage somewhat. I've never seen the temperature exceed 57 degrees, so that means that the fan stays constantly still.......
