Hi @jayjag,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
The issue you're experiencing could result from file associations or corrupted components after downgrading from Windows 11 to Windows 10. Here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve this:
1. Check File Associations
- Open Settings:
- Press Windows + I → Go to Apps → Default apps.
- Scroll down and click on Choose default apps by file type.
- Ensure that the correct application is associated with file types like .jpg, .png, etc.
2. Run File Checker and Repair Tools
- Run System File Checker (SFC):
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Press Windows + S, type cmd, right-click, and choose Run as administrator.
- Type the following and press Enter:
- Let it complete. If issues are found, it will attempt to repair them.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Run DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management):
- In the same Command Prompt, type and execute:
3. Check Photos App or Default Viewer
- If you're using the default Photos app, reinstall or repair it:
- Open PowerShell as Administrator:
- Press Windows + X → Choose Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run this command to reinstall:
- Then reinstall from the Microsoft Store.
- Open PowerShell as Administrator:
4. Test with Another Application
- Use third-party software like IrfanView, XnView, or GIMP to see if the files open correctly. This will help isolate whether the issue is specific to the default viewer.
5. Verify File Integrity
- If the files were stored in OneDrive, Google Drive, or an external drive, ensure they’re not corrupted:
- Try opening the files on another device or re-downloading them from the source.
6. Windows Update and Drivers
- Ensure you have the latest updates for Windows 10:
- Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Check for and install updates.
- Update graphics drivers from Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X, select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click on your GPU, and choose Update driver.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

hi ! this is a bit late but i had this same problem and figured out that the actual problem was the root of what youre using to open your files, if you're trying to opens pictures/screenshots or videos, try uninstalling the app you use to open those
eg i would use photos app and films & video , so i would go ahead and uninstall those apps and then reinstall.
