Hello @BRANCHEX ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

We are sorry that you are having trouble in connecting your phone with the laptop.

The "MTP USB error" typically occurs when there are issues with the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) connection, which is used to transfer files between your phone and the computer. Here are steps to help resolve this issue on your HP EliteBook 840 G3:

1. Check USB Connection Settings on Your Phone

  • On your phone, go to Settings > Connected devices.
  • Under USB Preferences, ensure that "File Transfer" or "MTP" (Media Transfer Protocol) is selected.

2. Update USB Drivers

Follow these steps to ensure that the latest USB drivers are installed on your laptop:

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Locate and expand Portable Devices or Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  • Right-click your device and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

3. Check For Windows Updates

Ensure your Windows operating system is up-to-date, as updates can fix known issues:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click on Check for updates and install any available updates.

4. Restart Both Devices

Sometimes, simply restarting your phone and laptop can resolve temporary glitches in the connection.

5. Use a Different USB Cable or Port

Try using another USB cable or port to rule out any potential issues with the current hardware.

6. Enable MTP via Developer Options

If the above steps do not work, you might need to enable MTP via the Developer Options on your phone:

  • Go to Settings > About phone.
  • Tap on Build number multiple times until it says you are a developer.
  • Go to Developer Options.
  • Scroll down and enable USB debugging.

7. Check for Hardware Troubles

If none of these steps resolve the issue, inspect both the USB cable and the ports on your phone and laptop for potential hardware damage, and consider testing with different devices to isolate the problem.

By following these methods, you should be able to resolve the MTP USB error and successfully connect your phone to your HP EliteBook 840 G3. If the issue persists, consult HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads for further assistance.

Hope this helps!
