HP EliteBook 845 G8 Notebook PC (1W3K6AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

my elitbook 845 g8 battery has only 37 cycles , yet it has 22% wear , no matter what battery health setting i choose in bios or hp power manager , it's the same percentage and it charges till 100% of that remaining capacity. i did a batter calibration and wear gone up to 24.5% : ( . has anyone confirmed what really happening with wear and limiting remaining capaciy, it should change with changing the charging settings but it seems to be same and topping off the charge , or is it a forced virtual wear. did anyone check what's really going on under the hood?

Hello,

Your device EB 845 G8 is about 4 years old computer based on when these devices (G8s) were manufactured by HP. It has a li-ion battery and what you describe is normal for these types of batteries - exactly what we’d expect from a lithium‑ion battery.

Battery wear is driven far more by time (and temperature) than by charge cycles. A 4‑year‑old battery with only 37 cycles sounds “barely used,” but chemically it has still been aging every single day since it left the factory.

  • Calendar aging: Lithium‑ion cells lose capacity simply by existing. Even unused, they typically lose 15–30% over 3–4 years depending on storage conditions.
  • High state of charge accelerates aging: If the laptop sat plugged in at 100% most of the time, that speeds up wear.
  • Heat is the real killer: Even mild warmth (e.g., 30–35°C inside a laptop chassis) slowly degrades the battery.
  • Manufacturing variance: Some batteries age faster than others even under identical conditions.

“Lithium batteries age like food in the fridge... even if you don’t eat it, it still gets older.”

Thank you so much for the explanation , however, since the full charge capacity now is 39,917 mWh and the current battery mode is "Maximize battery health" , shouldn't the laptop only charge to 80% of that 39,917 mWh , even if it displays 100% charged in windows. the problem is that is keeps charging till that 39,917 mWh.

Is there a way to make " "Maximize battery health" mode work?! everything is updated bios, drivers and windows. it just keeps charging to full available capacity everytime. Is it a bug?! I just want to minimize further battery wear from charging.
