HP ProBook 650 G8 Notebook PC (1Y5L3AV)

 

Subject: Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 – Driver installation/start failure on HP ProBook 650 G8

I am experiencing a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth problem on my HP ProBook 650 G8 running Windows 11 Pro.

The Wi-Fi adapter is identified as:

Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz

Hardware ID:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A0F0&SUBSYS_00948086&REV_20

Current problem:

  • Without a driver, Windows shows the device as Network Controller – Code 28, with the message: “There are no compatible drivers for this device.”

  • When the Intel/HP AX201 driver is manually forced/installed, the device changes to Code 10 (CM_PROB_FAILED_START).

  • pnputil currently reports:

    • Driver Name: oem162.inf

    • Extension Driver: oem55.inf

    • Problem Code: 10

    • Problem Status: 0xC0000001

I tested the official HP WLAN package SP152292 (23.40.0.4) and Intel/HP wireless package SP173903 (24.60.0.3). Both packages contain AX201-related driver sections, but neither contains a direct hardware-ID match for:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A0F0&SUBSYS_00948086

The Windows SetupAPI log reports:

“Could not find primary driver to support extension INF”

and:

“Error 0xe0000228: There are no compatible drivers for this device.”

The Bluetooth device is also affected. It appears as:

USB\VID_8087&PID_0033

and previously showed Code 54 (CM_PROB_DEVICE_RESET).

I have already:

  • Restored BIOS defaults.

  • Ran HP UEFI hardware diagnostics with no errors.

  • Performed a complete power reset.

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth drivers.

  • Tested both HP and Intel driver packages.

Could you please confirm the correct WLAN/Bluetooth driver package and hardware configuration for this specific HP ProBook 650 G8, and advise whether SUBSYS_00948086 is expected for the original AX201 module in this system? If not, please advise whether the wireless module/firmware needs to be replaced or reconfigured.

For the HP ProBook 650 G8 (System SKU: 52V82EC#ABD), the Intel Wi‑Fi 6 AX201 and Intel Bluetooth devices are integrated components that rely on the Intel chipset, firmware, BIOS, and matching HP driver packages to initialize correctly. The combination of:

  • Code 28 before driver installation
  • Code 10 (CM_PROB_FAILED_START) after installation
  • Status 0xC0000001
  • SetupAPI reporting "Could not find primary driver to support extension INF"
  • AX201 hardware ID not matching the INF sections being installed
  • Bluetooth device (VID_8087&PID_0033) also affected

suggests that Windows is not successfully binding the correct base WLAN driver to the hardware.

 

Please try the following troubleshooting sequence:

 

Verify Wireless Hardware Presence in BIOS

 

Since the AX201 and Bluetooth devices are both affected, first confirm the wireless hardware is being detected by the platform.

  • Restart the notebook.
  • Press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Navigate to:
    • Advanced
    • Built-In Device Options
  • Verify that:
    • WLAN is enabled.
    • Bluetooth is enabled.
  • Save and exit.

If either option is unavailable or missing, it may indicate a hardware communication issue between the system board and wireless module.

 

Perform a BIOS Recovery and Reflash

 

Although BIOS version T74 01.25.01 is installed, the wireless device firmware handshake can occasionally be affected by a BIOS component inconsistency.

  • Download the latest BIOS package for the HP ProBook 650 G8 from HP Support.
  • Run the BIOS update again even if the same version is currently installed.
  • After completion:
    • Load BIOS defaults.
    • Save changes.
    • Restart Windows.

 

Remove All Existing Wireless Driver Packages

 

The SetupAPI entries indicate that multiple driver packages may be present.

 

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and review installed Intel wireless packages:

pnputil /enum-drivers | findstr /i "netwtw btwi"

 

Remove all Intel wireless and Bluetooth OEM packages that correspond to AX201/AX211 drivers.

  • Restart the system.
  • Allow Windows to rediscover the hardware.

The AX201 depends on Intel platform components.

 

From HP Support for the ProBook 650 G8, install in the following order:

  1. Intel Chipset Driver
  2. Intel Serial IO Driver
  3. Intel Management Engine Driver
  4. Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework components (if available)
  5. Restart
  6. Install HP Wireless LAN Driver
  7. Install HP Bluetooth Driver

 

After installation, verify Device Manager status.

 

Check Device Manager Hardware IDs Again

 

In Device Manager:

  • Right-click Network Controller.
  • Properties.
  • Details tab.
  • Hardware IDs.

Please verify whether the hardware ID remains exactly:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A0F0&SUBSYS_00948086

 

or whether additional IDs appear in the Compatible IDs section.

 

If the detected IDs differ from the IDs supported by the HP package INF files, Windows will install the package but fail to start the device, resulting in the Code 10 condition you are currently seeing.

 

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Wireless Tests

 

Since the general hardware diagnostics passed, run the wireless-specific tests:

  • Press Esc during startup.
  • Select F2 System Diagnostics.
  • Component Tests.
  • Wireless Module Test.
  • WLAN Test.
  • Bluetooth Test.

A failure here would strongly indicate a wireless hardware communication issue rather than a Windows driver issue.

 

Compare Wireless Module Configuration

 

The hardware ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A0F0&SUBSYS_00948086 is an Intel-assigned subsystem identifier rather than a typical HP-customized subsystem ID.

 

Because the installed driver packages do not appear to contain a direct match for this subsystem, one possibility is:

  • The original wireless module was replaced previously.
  • The module firmware is not presenting the expected identifiers.
  • The module is no longer enumerating correctly due to an internal hardware fault.

This would also explain why the Bluetooth component associated with the same wireless card is experiencing start and reset issues.

 

Observe Device Enumeration

 

In Device Manager, check whether any of the following occur:

  • Device intermittently disappears after reboot.
  • Device changes between Network Controller and Intel Wi‑Fi 6 AX201.
  • Bluetooth device appears and disappears.
  • Unknown USB device entries appear alongside VID_8087&PID_0033.

Intermittent enumeration is often a sign that the wireless module is not maintaining consistent communication with the platform.

 

Based on everything you have already tested, the most significant indicators are:

  • No direct driver match being reported during installation.
  • Code 10 with status 0xC0000001 after forcing the driver.
  • SetupAPI reporting that a primary driver cannot be found for the extension INF.
  • Both Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth functions being affected simultaneously.

 

These findings suggest the issue is less likely to be a standard Windows driver problem and more likely related to wireless module identification, firmware communication, or the wireless hardware itself. Verifying the exact hardware IDs after clean driver removal and running the HP wireless component diagnostics would be the next most valuable steps to determine whether the AX201 module is being presented correctly to the system.
