I find it difficult to know how hard and how long to press the recessed on/off switch ! The only way I can be sure is to look at the edge of the keyboard to check if the tiny white light is on or not. A bit awkward, as I am disabled and not sitting upright, but reclining. So do I tap it? Press it? Stamp on the thing? Hold it down? Press it once or more times? Sorry you must think I am an idiot, (well you are right) but its a question of how much or how little. Any answers would be gratefully recieved, Maybe you could spend a few minutes experimenting, for me, that is painful, due to a stupid spine held together with titanium plates! Thank you, have a good day with your HP sauce (sorry laptop) Skizzcat.

Hello.
The Power button is always meant to be pressed briefly when you are turning the computer on, or when entering or exiting sleep mode.
If the computer is on and you keep the power button pressed for several seconds the computer will turn off without a graceful shutdown. It is only handy if your laptop stops responding (hangs) or shutdown/restart does not work for some reason or you need to stop the computer in an emergency.
The power button is always meant to be pressed only once. When turning on the computer, you need to be patient because it may take a few seconds for the screen to show anything. If you keep hitting the power button when starting the laptop, it may register the power button press again and turn it off.
The power button is not a touch switch, you need to press it with your finger. The amount of force required is bit higher than required for the keys on the keyboard, no need to stamp on it. 🙂

Hi there Jupitero,
Thanks very much for your detailed answer. From now on I will do
EXACTLY as you suggest. However, and this is nothing to do with you,
but you must admit that the tiny recessed switch is not very easy to
operate, Have a nice day,

Hi,
I agree, the power button on that generation laptops just wasn't as nice as it used to be on earlier models.
The laptop I'm typing this with has a power button there on the top row with other keyboard buttons and could be easily pressed because it is not separate from other keys and is not recessed in any way, which is also poor design. Not a problem for me (nor is the recessed button you have) but I can see it causing unwanted presses for some.
Take care.
