Considerations

1)  Base Hardware -- vents are located on the bottom and on the back of the case -- obstructing either of these areas will decrease the workstation's cooling.  Reference > Maintenance and Service Guide  >> Pages 14-15

2)  Built-in Components -- depending on how massively you overpowered your specification choices, the workstation might be running one to many top-of-line components - not all, but some of these might generate more heat than "lesser" components.  The point of this comment is to emphasis the general need to protect cooling options as best as can be done.

Reference:  HP ZBook Power 15.6 inch G10 Mobile Workstation PC specifications

3)   Battery Health -- Batter failing, old, bloated?  Unlikely and issue in a newer system -- if all else does not apply, check the battery's condition.  Generally, if the battery is "bad", the load on the battery might not be a factor.

4)  Room Temperature >> Work environment not too warm

5)  Processes >> Work load -- less load generates less heat

Example

I have a fully loaded ZBook 17 G8 -- I keep it mounted on a metal grate (bottom and all side cooling) - the back side is away from walls and obstructions.  True - fully loaded workstation runs a couple or so hours on battery, less than that if pushed hard.  Expected in my case.  True - different systems and environment, my experience might not be related to your situation.

What to do?

Sample ideas

  • Increase cooling opportunities - keep vents clear, metal grid notebook stand
  • Make sure BIOS is kept updated (generally good advice)
  • Check / Adjust the settings to reduce the load on the system when on battery -
    • Remember >> Running a complicated Display Background or Slideshow increases the work the system is doing.  Simple background and no slideshows...
    • Check >> Settings > System > Power & battery
    • Consider reducing the CPU output when running on battery.
