Hi all,i am trying to use a gpt partitioned ssd,if i set ueif to enabled in the bios all operating systems see it as a basic disk,My lappy is an elitebook 8730w,from what i gather hp cheaped out by having to have an hp tools section on the disk,as this is a new sata ssd can anyone tell me what i have to do to make it work so the machine actualy works in ueif mode,Its driving me nuts, thanks Paul.

Hello.
If you have a new SSD, how does it already have the HP_TOOLS partition? Did you clone your old disk to this SSD?
With Windows 7 (and earlier) HP placed the diagnostics and BIOS update tools on this HP_TOOLS partition due to lacking UEFI support back then. From Windows 8 on the diagnostics have been on EFI boot partition.
If you cloned your old disk to the SSD, the disk type will not magically convert from MBR to GPT and changing the mode could cause your operating system to fail boot up. If the new SSD is >2TB then it needs to be in GPT format.

In answer to your question, the old drive was not cloned as it was dead,i put the hp tools partition on the drive using the file from the drivers download on the hp support site,i made the hp_tools partition on the new hd then converted it to gpt using another pc,when i try and install any version of windows on the hd i get the message"windows cant be installed on a gpt disk",This is with the uefi option enabled in bios, how do i make it so i can put windows on this gpt drive on this pc?.

Hi again,
did you solve this?
"Basic disk" can be MBR or GPT formatted drive, and every disks is "basic" unless converted into Dynamic disks for software RAID usage under Windows.
You can check whether your disk is MBR or GPT formatted in Disk Manager by selecting the properties of the disk (presumably Disk 0), and then the Volumes tab.
