I have had many HP laptops including the HP omen and currently I'm using the HP envy X360 every time I after a couple of years even though I take great care of the laptops the keyboards stopped working.

I'm not talking about the whole keyboard just a few keys for example right now, the letter H and the letter T and the letter Y are not working. there are no crumbs, no dust. I have used an air blower just to make sure.

I take care of my laptops.  I have used the HP diagnostic tool,  I have used troubleshooting, I have checked all the drivers!!

just a couple of keys are not working !!

why!?!  like what could be wrong??

do I need to change the whole laptop keyboard ??

this is so frustrating

Hi @hdaackda,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can truly feel your frustration, especially when you’ve taken such good care of your laptops and still face the same issue across multiple HP models. You’re not just maintaining devices; you’re preserving tools that support your work and creativity. When they fail you, especially in such a specific and recurring way, it’s incredibly disheartening.

Let’s break this down and explore.

What You Can Do

Try an External Keyboard Test

  • Connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
  • If all keys work fine, it confirms the issue is hardware-related to the built-in keyboard.

Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics (Keyboard Test)

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly → then F2 for diagnostics.
  • Run the keyboard test to see which keys fail.

Check for Embedded Controller (EC) Firmware Updates

Consider a Keyboard Replacement

  • Unfortunately, yes, if the issue is physical, you may need to replace the entire keyboard assembly.
  • HP keyboards are often part of the top cover, so replacement can be costly unless done under warranty.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
