I'm thing about purchasing a 128GB memory upgrade for my Z420 Workstation. I was wounder if the Z420 can handle 128GB of 10600 speed LRDIMM (4x32gb) sticks. Will this upgrade I'm doing potentially damage my machine?

Yes, your HP Z420 Workstation is capable to run 128GB of RAM, even though the HP specs say otherwise.
Looking here, there are several HP Z420 Users who fitted 8 x 16GB of DDR4-3200 MHz running at 1866 MHz, such as this Z420 User example: HP Z420 Workstation Performance Results - UserBenchmark.
Point is, even though an HP Z420 is compatible with 8 x 16GB aka 128GB RAM, it doesn't necessarily follow that it would be compatible with 4 x 32GB of RAM sticks. -It should, but you'll have to try and see: it will either work, or not, but it will not harm your machine.

I saw this Z820 that has 4 sticks per cpu of 32GB, happily chugging along. So 4 sticks of 32GB should also work on Z420 no issues - as long as it's the correct DRAM type.

Forgot to say, I just grabbed 8x16GB sticks of Ebay a month ago, populated all 8 slots on Z620 cpu0. The upgrade cost was two 20s! 0.30c per GB.

Below are the 16GB ECC buffered memory sticks that I've tested in Z420v2 / Z620v2 workstations, and they also should work in the Z820v2. I even tested them in Z600v2 workstations with the faster processors, and those can run it fine but the max speed they can run in a Z600v2 is at 1333MHz (limitation of the box). They won't run in a Z400v2. In the ZX20v2 workstations they need the 1866MHz v2 processor(s) to run at their max 1866MHz speed, of course. My notes indicate I even tested them in ZX20v1 workstations, but I did not save any HP Memory Diagnostics results from that. They worked there too.
Just checked eBay... the HP ones are down to about 8.00USD, shipping included. The Dell ones are about 11.00 for no good reason. These are equal sticks, HP or Dell, but HP is said to bin their memory for above spec performance. Some notes from the past:
My testing has been done only with the Micron versions, with Assembly part number of 712383-581, 1866 MHz, option part number of E2Q95AA, but HP also uses Samsung and SKHynix equivalents under the same Assembly P/N. These are HPE (Enterprise) memory sticks. There also is an Assembly P/N 712383-081 equivalent, 1866 MHz (with a spares P/N of 715274-001) on the HP holographic right side label. The Assembly P/N is what is shown on the stick, right side HP label. A spares number generally is not shown on the stick but can be what you see via HP PartSurfer. Some right side HP labels include both.
Samsung version:
M393B2G70QH0-CMAQ8 M 16GB 2RX4 PC3-14900R-13-12-E2-D3 (or D4)
M393B2G70DB0-CMAQ2M
SKHynix version:
HMT42GR7BFR4C-RD T8 or T4
Micron Version
MT36JSF2G72PZ-1G9E1HF
Dell also uses these same 16GB sticks but with Dell code numbers on the right side Dell label:
SNP12C23C/16G (right side Dell label number)
Have seen Dell use the Micron, SKHynix, and Samsung same memory stick versions as HP.
A few pics... I only got one set of 8 Micron HP 16GB sticks because what we do in our enterprise does not need such an amount of memory.... we generally run 8GB sticks x 4 or x8 for what we do. Lots of memory generates more heat but I always build with the memory cooling saddle option in our Z420 and Z620 workstations, plus the front HP case cooling fan. We've moved on to the next generations... a bit more:
