Z820
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My boot time for the Z820 is really slow.

Any owners kind to share some tips to improve boot time?

Mr_projects,

1. A set of many, complex and/or large  programs can slow boot time if they are all allowed to start at boot. Consider using msconfig  > Startup to  stop selected programs from starting at boot. Modify only one at a time and make sure the results are acceptable. Some services can be stopped at boot, but be extremely careful- do not stop any MS services at boot. Programs may take slightly longer to start when used, but in my experience, it is almost imperceptible.

2. Check for the latest BIOS.

3.  Running a hardware RAID controller can slow the boot time substantially because of the time required for initiation. The office z420_2 has been using an HP/LSI  9212-4i RAID /HBA to have 4X SATAIII and that made the boot time probably doubled. When a particular large project is finished that has a special 4TB drive, it will be taken out.

4. An M.2 boot drive can be very quick to boot; power button to use in about 25 seconds. The Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe may be used in zX20 with the special Samsung boot module it uses and that will be probably the fastest plug-in option . Still quite fast - 2200 MB/s read- is the Samsung SM951 M.2 AHCI (256GB and 512GB) which is the drive in the HP Z Turbo Drive for the z820. The office z620_2 uses a 256GB Z Turbo Drive and when changed to W10 will be running on a SM951 512GB AHCI mounted on a Lycom DT-120 PCIe to M.2 adapter. The z620_2 also uses a Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe 500GB for the current projects drive. The zX20 systems can use NVMe for data drives without special measures.

There are a number of users that have managed to use M.2 NVMe e.g. Samsung 970 EVO with a boot loader.e.g. Clover on a USB drive that loads the BIOS module and there are certain enterprise level : large capacity Micron & c. that are supposed ot be usable natively.
